Story: How the Rabbit Lost His Tail
Plot: Rabbit used to be able to walk and run like other animals, and he had a long tail. Fisher, on his way to get married, fell into a pit and Rabbit offered him his long tail to use to climb out, but the fisher was too heavy and the tail broke off. Then Rabbit lowered his legs into the pit, which made his legs longer and his waist more narrow. That's why Rabbit has to hop now. When the bride tore her gown, Rabbit helped, but as he tried to repair the gown, a cord twisted round, hit him, and split his lip. In return, the bride gave Rabbit a beautiful white fur to wear in winter in the snow; he wears white in winter, brown in summer. When Rabbit saw his reflection, he was dismayed and begged Glooscap to restore his old body. But Glooscap explained how the hare lip would help him sniff out clover, and how he now hopped on those long legs faster than he used to run, and he would no longer get his tail tangled in brambles.
"And thus, kespeadooksit—the story ends."
